Grasslands dominated by Corynephorus canescens occur primarily in coastal areas, but also on inland dunes. The sands are poor in nutrients, especially nitrogen. The vegetation of these grasslands is species-poor. Vascular plant cover is usually fairly open, allowing bryophytes and lichens (especially Cladonia spp.) to play an important role. In the Interpretation Manual of European Habitats, these grasslands are regarded as a pioneer phase of Atlantic decalcified fixed dunes (Calluno-Ulicetea) (Habitat code 2150).
